No.4 c/d Tractor Schedules

I came across this document amongst the collection of drawings, documents and artifacts relating to the firm of Richard Garrett & Sons Ltd. of Leiston, Suffolk. The collection had been assembled by my late father-in-law Bob Whitehead and consists of items that had been purchased or given to him by the management of the firm during his researches into the history of Garretts.

Having studied the document, I have concluded that these schedules must be the most comprehensive parts list available for a Garrett 4cd tractor; they list all components and the quantities required from small items such as split pins, hinge pins for oil box lids and spring washers up to major parts such as the cylinder casting and the crankshaft, with accompanying sketches of each part. The copy from which this was scanned is in blueprint form and consists of 120 roughly hand cut sheets.

I am not sure of the exact date of the schedules; the index page mentions drawing list 36, which was produced in April 1909, but later drawings, such as CR17821 which dates from October 1919 are included. I have therefore assumed that it started with list (specification) 36 but was then regularly updated. I have therefore concluded that it is representative of the standard No.4 tractor as produced in 1919.

When read in conjunction with a copy of the build sheet for a particular engine, the drawing list (Specification) mentioned on the build sheet and these schedules, it should be possible to obtain the drawing number, standard detail number, or origin of a bought out item for every part used in the construction of the tractor. See the Garrett Drawings page for more information about how to obtain drawings and conducting further research. If you would like to know more about Garrett Tractors I would recommend purchase of a copy of Garrett Steam Tractors and Rollers available via the R.A. Whitehead Books page.

I have made pdf copies of this 120 page document available to purchase as a download for £20.00 per copy. It should prove invaluable to owners, restorers and operators of full size and miniature Garrett 4 cd tractors and the roller variant, to assist in identifying parts and the relevant drawings to enable their reproduction.
